Gilberto Gil

Gilberto Gil is recognized as one of the true pioneers of world music.

During a prolific artistic career spanning more than 40 years he has recorded over 60 albums and won two Grammy Awards, deploying an eclectic range of influences including rock, jazz, blues, samba and reggae.

Other recognition for his work includes the prestigious Légion d'Honneur from the French government.

Gil is also recognized for his political commitment, having served as Brazil's Minister of Culture under former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

He was appointed an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2001. His contributions include a concert in Rome, titled Gilberto Gil – with FAO against hunger in the world, and performing at the event Música vs hambre (Music Against Hunger) in Paraguay.

“Join hands with FAO in its fight against hunger,” he said. “It is not a question of the survival of the fittest. It is a question of survival.”
