Meet the Goodwill Ambassadors

Maná

Mexican group Maná have won four Grammy awards, sold millions of albums and staged sell-out tours around the world.

The group’s music spans cultural divides and gives voice to social and environmental issues, with a mix of rock, Latin pop, calypso, reggae and ska influences.

Members Fher Olvera, Alex González, Sergio Vallín and Juan Calleros created a non-governmental organization, Selva Negra (Black Forest Foundation), focused on sustainable development issues in Latin America.

Maná were appointed an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2003. “We pledge to take the new responsibility very seriously,” the group said in a statement. “We will attempt to carry the appropriate message as we travel around the world."

The group have dedicated concert proceeds to FAO small-scale projects and also performed in FAO’s Groundwork concert alongside REM, Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews, with money raised also going to projects. They have also recorded videos for World Food Day events.

The band say their song Justicia, Tierra y Libertad (Justice, Land and Liberty), from the Revolución de Amor album, is a message of hope in seeking a world without hunger.
