Meet the Goodwill Ambassadors

Patrick Vieira

"Through the reputation of Roberto Baggio, Raúl and mine we wish to highlight FAO's work and mission. Like them, I commit myself to utilize my international name recognition to sensitize world public opinion to FAO's objectives in order to contribute to its efforts to raise awareness to issues related to food security and hunger in the world. I commit myself to draw everybody's attention to the right to food of each and everyone in the world".

After leaving Senegal with his family when 8 years old, Patrick Vieira began his fantastic career at the age of 17 with AS Cannes, before joining Arsenal at only 20. In England, Patrick Vieira quickly made a name for himself and with Emmanuel Petit formed  one of the best defensive partnerships in the world.

World Cup winner in 1998 and Euro 2000 winner, his unique style, length of stride towards goal and impressive ball winning rated him one of the best midfielders in the world, both for club and country which he captained after France’s disappointing Euro 2004. At Arsenal, ‘Pat’ became a legend in the club managed by Arsène Wenger, rising to captain and winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

After nine years in London, ‘Pat’ dubbed ‘la pieuvre’ (the octopus) left Arsenal and moved to Juventus of Turin, then to Inter of Milan. So far he has won four Serie A titles. He also played exceptionally well at the 2006 World Cup.

Patrick Vieira, iconic player of the French team, has decided to help FAO combat world hunger by joining its Professional Football against Hunger Solidarity Campaign.

Patrick Vieira was appointed FAO Goodwill Ambassador on 11 May 2010.
