Roberto Baggio

Ex-footballer Roberto Baggio is a former FIFA World Player of the Year and Balon d’Or winner.

He is the only Italian player to score in three World Cups and shares the record for most goals by an Italian in the tournament.

His club-level career was equally impressive, with more than 300 goals as well as honours including two Serie A titles.

Baggio was nominated an FAO Goodwill Ambassador in 2002. "I feel a moral obligation to stand here today on behalf of the people stricken with poverty, to lend every support to FAO in its global campaign against hunger," he said.

His work has included supporting the Professional Football Against Hunger campaign and visiting field projects in Laos and Peru.

Baggio’s commitment to social causes has been recognized with the World Peace Award, an annual honour bestowed by Nobel Peace Prize laureates.
