The University of the West Indies, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Agricultural Society of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Cropper Foundation are hosts to a candle light vigil on 21st October 2008 from 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm in front of the Old Administration Building at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Campus.

This vigil is part of this year’s World Food Day events with the theme “World Food Security; the challenge of climate change and bioenergy”. The backdrop of the University's Old Administration is symbolic, representing its sixty year legacy of education in tropical agriculture, and its links to generations of scientists in Africa and Asia, during its era as the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture.

The simple candle light ceremony links the aspirations of the global community with an individual commitment to achieve the human right to food for everyone, Millennium Development Goal Number One. Through the symbolic lighting of candles, we will join a circle of personal and global commitments, at dusk across the time zones of the world.
