اتفقت البلدان الأعضاء في منظمة الأغذية والزراعة على إقامة "يوم الأغذية العالمي"، وذلك أثناء الدورة العشرين للمؤتمر العام للمنظمة في نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 1979. ويوافق اليوم الذي اختارته لهذا الاحتفال - وهو 16 أكتوبر/تشرين الأول - ذكرى الاحتفال بقيام منظمة الأغذية والزراعة.
