Good practice guides for the handling of vulnerable species caught incidentally in Mediterranean fisheries

Objective of the guides

In response to the requirements of relevant GFCM recommendations on reducing incidental catches of vulnerable species (cetaceans, seabirds, sharks and rays, sea turtles), these guides were prepared in the framework of a project that aimed to mitigate the negative interactions between endangered marine species and fishing activities. The project was developed by the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS) and the Secretariat of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in collaboration with the Specially Protected Areas Regional Activity Center (SPA/RAC). The main objective of this guide is to promote awareness and responsible fishing practices among the fishers community in the GFCM area of application.
