General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean - GFCM

Aquaculture Demonstrative Centre online – Demonstrative training on finfish pathology

05/04/2021

Following the success of the Aquaculture Demonstrative Centre (ADC) online last year, with over 4 000 participants, the GFCM is organizing a training on finfish pathology from 5 to 13 April 2021, in collaboration with experts from the ADC at the Central Fisheries Research Institute (SUMAE) in Trabzon, Turkey.

The GFCM is working towards sharing effective management measures for aquaculture farms in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. These measures are based on epidemiological knowledge and early diagnosis of pathogens in fish farms, as well as on the application of effective biosecurity measures at the farm level, adaptive management, and a harmonized approach to strengthening surveillance systems.

The purpose of this seven–day ADC online training is to share with participants the latest progress made on animal health and management in finfish aquaculture. It also aims to build capacity in controlling and preventing diseases, namely by:

  • Taking stock of advances in the field of finfish pathology;
  • Presenting early diagnosis of pathogens in fish farms and disease analysis;
  • Identifying challenges related to aquatic animal health;
  • Sharing epidemiological knowledge, analysis, and diagnosis;
  • Presenting sanitary biosecurity measures at the farm level, including the responsible use of registered, recorded, and traceable medicines and vaccines;
  • Identifying bacterial, viral, and parasitic fish diseases through different methodologies including classical biochemical and rapid testing and antibiotic susceptibility; and
  • Improving the knowledge of basic and advanced molecular tools for finfish pathology identification through DNA extraction, nanodrop or polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

The ADC online courses will be held via Zoom. We invite everyone interested to join us in this initiative!
