EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Workshop on the assessment of management measures for small-pelagic and demersal species in the Adriatic Sea (WKMSE-AS)1 of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) was held at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters,Rome, Italy on 17–18 May 2019. The meeting was attended by nineteen experts including representatives of the FAO regional projects and the GFCM Secretariat. The meeting was divided into two sessions, one dedicated to small pelagics resources and the other to demersal fisheries both in the Adriatic Sea. The session dedicated to small pelagic species summarised the advances made on the biological management strategy evaluation (MSE) based on the validated space assessment model (SAM) and concentrated on discussing the socio-economic component through consultations between the scientific experts, administration experts and stakeholders towards the identification of the social and economic data required to advance towards the assessment of the potential socio- economic impact of alternative measures. The session on demersals revised the analysis on the potential effect of alternative management scenarios carried out in a dedicated Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF) meeting and provided comments in order to facilitate the expected discussion during the Subregional Committee on Adriatic Sea in support of the requested advice for the management of demersal species in the subregion.
