Earth Information Day

30 November 2020 - 30 December 2020

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is organizing the Earth Information Day 2020 on 30 November to provide an update on the state of the global climate in 2020.

The Earth Information Days foster the exchange of information on the state of the global climate system and developments in systematic observation. Data, services and information in this field are vital to support sound decision making on adaptation and mitigation.

Following the Earth Information Day held in 2016, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) has invited the UNFCCC Secretariat to consider the organization of similar events, which deal with relevant topics guided by submissions of the Parties to the UNFCCC.

The themes addressed this year include:

  • updates on the state of the global climate system and its observation (including imprints of Covid-19)
  • recent advances in Earth observation technology and data processing to support decision making

María José Sanz Sánchez, Chair of the GFOI's Advisory Group for the Methods and Guidance Documentation (MGD), will speak on behalf of the Initiative to provide an update of GFOI’s work: "GFOI assisting developing countries in improving national forest information and reporting".
