As a flagship of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) is pleased to invite its community of forest monitoring practitioners to participate in a webinar series hosted by GEO and organized by the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

The webinars will take place on 3 and 4 February 2021 and will zoom in on Brazil’s forest monitoring practices, including in the Amazon biome.

INPE’s monitoring system is one of the longest running tropical deforestation monitoring systems in the world and hence has accumulated a lot of practical experience that is of great interest to other tropical countries and forest monitoring practitioners. Webinar participants will learn about Brazil’s forest monitoring systems, associated tools and procedures, and the recent technological advances used by INPE to monitor deforestation in the Amazon.

The webinar will provide an overview, including history and future plans, of:

  • INPE’s Deforestation Monitoring System (PRODES)
  • INPE’s System for Alerts of Deforestation and Degradation (DETER)
  • The TerraAmazon software for forest monitoring
  • The Brazilian Data Cube project (BDC): innovation to automate land use and land cover data production using Big Earth Observation data and machine learning methods
