JAXA Satellites for SDGs 15 - Forest Monitoring

2020
JAXA's Earth observation satellites are contributing to track forest changes and manage forest sustainably to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 15 “Life on Land”. For the period 2010-2015 the annual forest net change in the tropical domain was year almost 6 (5.5) million hectares per year (FAO 2015). Advanced Land Observing Satellite-2 (ALOS-2) is capable of observing forests covered with clouds even at night. JAXA, in cooperation with JICA, has developed JJ-FAST: JICA-JAXA Forest Early Warning System in the Tropics. This system uses ALOS-2 data to monitor logging and changing status of tropical forests, and is currently used in 77 countries around the world.
