5 June 2018, Accra - A participatory strategy and action plan workshop (gap analysis) involving national institutions is currently on-going in Accra, Ghana, to assist the country in ascertaining the need to strengthen national legislation, institutional set up, and monitoring, control and surveillance systems and operations consistent with the provisions of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA) to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Ghana became a Party to the PSMA on 29 December 2016.

The results of this FAO-assisted workshop will contribute to Ghana’s efforts in implementing the PSMA and, more broadly, in enhancing capacity to combat IUU fishing through port State measures and related instruments and tools.

The workshop is being conducted under the auspices of FAO's global capacity development programme to support the implementation of the Agreement, in particular through financing from the Port State Measures Support Project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).
