Hand in Hand with nature: Understanding Nature-Based Solutions in agriculture through GIAHS

The GIAHS-Secretariat is pleased to present its participation in the first webinar of a series on Nature-Based Solutions in Agriculture organized by the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU) the past 1st December 2020.

It was organized under the Regional Initiative focused onManaging natural resources sustainably under a changing climate.” The event sought to generate a multi-stakeholder platform to upscale Nature-Based Solutions in Agriculture in the region, based on real cases, tools and science-based evidences.

This first webinar was an opportunity for FAO to provide insights on Nature-Based Solutions in Agriculture with real and time- tested examples coming from Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). The objective of the webinar was to also open a debate on the potentialities of Nature-Based Solutions that can support the agri-food systems of the countries.

About GIAHS

The Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) of the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO) are remarkable traditional agricultural systems that safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale family farmers who practice sustainable agriculture based on local and indigenous knowledge. GIAHS not only produce food, but these time-tested systems also conserve biodiversity, preserve cultural heritages and their centuries-old wisdom can provide important lessons in building back better for the planet and its people. Today, there are 62 designated GIAHS sites in 22 countries where local communities continue to inherit the sustainable approaches of traditional farming with a deep-rooted respect for nature and culture.
