Qanat-based Saffron Farming System in Gonabad

Summary

The proposed area is a part of Iran's central plateau with arid and semi-arid climate. The climate is harsh with a water shortage, which leads challenges for improving livelihood and food security of its inhabitants. Thanks to the Qanat (aquaduct) system, high value added products, especially saffron, has created a significant opportunity for farmers and residents in the area. The excellence of saffron in the proposed area has been achieved by not only favourable climate for saffron but also indigenous knowledge and skills to grow saffron, which has been conserved for generations.
