Salak Agroforestry System in Karangasem, Bali

Traditionally since the 14th Century, the local farmers have cultivated salak fruit (Salacca Zalacca, Family Arecaceae) as their main source of livelihood to adapt agriculture to the dry lands of the Karangasem region. The sustainability of this agriculture system is made possible by an integrated agroforestry agricultural heritage system based on the local Balinese phylosophy and social organisation called Subak Abian.

The agroforestry practiced system is agro-silvo-pastural involving three elements; namely, livestock, forest and crops using five different strata to manage a very rich wild and domesticated agrobiodiversity.
