CBD COP11: an invitation to a GIAHS Side Event

Hyderabad, India, 2 October 2012

MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will hold a Side Event on “CONSERVATION AND ADAPTIVE MANAGEMENT OF GLOBALLY IMPORTANT AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE SYSTEMS (GIAHS)”  during the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP11).

Chaired by Prof MS Swaminathan, Emeritus Chairman, MSRRF and hailed as the Father of the Green Revolution in India, the side event will be held on Tuesday, 9 October 2012, in Side Event Room 2 (HITEX 1 - Ground Level) with the following objectives:

- to showcase the characteristics of the recently designated GIAHS site in Indi, the traditional agriculture system of Koraput and GIAHS potential site, below sea level farming system in the Kuttanad region;

- to understand the extent of traditional agriculture and its potential values and benefits in improving livelihoods and ecological security, based on the sustainable management of bio-resources of these systems while giving concurrent attention to the local traditional knowledge systems; and   

- to foster discussion, and to share experiences, best practices and lessons learned of local governments and tribal communities.
