Invitation to GIAHS Side Event at CBD COP 11: Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS): A Legacy For The Future!

Hyderabad, India, 17 October 2012

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations will host a side event on GLOBALLY IMPORTANT AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE SYSTEMS (GIAHS): A LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE!

 The event will be held during the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP11), unfolding this week in Hyderabad, India.

 The event will showcase the enormous contributions and important role of family farmers, indigenous peoples and local communities in managing, conserving and sustaining our biodiversity. In particular, the discussion will focus on humanity’s agricultural heritage systems, exploring how these contribute to biodiversity conservation. Moreover, progress in the implementation of the GIAHS Initiative and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets will be presented.

 The GIAHS side event will be held on Thursday, 18 October 2012, from 18:15 to 19:45 hours in Room 2.01 - Level 2. On behalf of Dr. Parviz Koohafkan, GIAHS Global Coordinator, Dr Kent Nnadozie, Senior Treaty Officer, ITPGRFA/FAO, will address the concept and practice of dynamic conservation in GIAHS systems around the world. In addition, key panellist and special guest, Dr Anne McDonald, Senior Advisor, Ishikawa Province (Japan) and Professor, Sophia University, Tokyo (Japan), will present the experiences of “GIAHS: Noto’s Satoyama and Satoumi”.
