 The late onset of the 2012 summer monsoon, followed by a prolonged dry spell during the months of June and July is expected to negatively affect production of the 2012 main Kharif season crops
Normal rains from late July over many crop producing areas provided some relief and allowed planting to take place, however the late start of the planting period is expected to reduce crop yields
In spite of the expected reduction in grains harvest, the overall food security in the country is considered to be satisfactory given the high level of stocks
The expected reduction of the yields due to the dry spell will likely lower India's sugar availability for exports
