Malawi lifts maize export ban

31/10/2017,

In late October, the Government lifted a two-year ban on maize exports, which had been implemented in an effort to stem the impact of tight domestic supplies following the reduced output, due to dry weather, in 2016. However, the 2017 maize output rebounded by 46 percent from the previous year and is officially estimated at an above-average level of nearly 3.5 million tonnes. The favourable supply situation prompted the Government to lift the ban and only minimal volumes of imports are expected in the 2017/18 marketing year (April/March).
