Pakistan raises wheat support price

On 12 March, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) fixed the minimum support price of wheat, which was increased, in line with recommendations of the Wheat Review Committee, to PKR 1 400 per 40 kg, 2.6 percent above the level announced in late November (FPMA Food Policies). The wheat procurement target is set at 8.25 million tonnes, out of which, the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corporation Limited (PASSCO) will procure 1.80 million tonnes, 4.50 million tonnes will be procured by the provincial Government of Punjab, 1.40 million tonnes will be purchased in the province of Sindh, 0.45 million tonnes in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and 0.10 million tonnes in Balochistan. The ECC also set up a Wheat Procurement Monitoring Group to ensure the smooth unfolding of the procurement programme, which will begin on 15 March.
