Pakistan takes steps to tackle high prices of wheat

06/07/2020,

On 3 July, the Government of Punjab approved the release of 900 000 tonnes of wheat to flour millers at PKR 1475 per maund (about 40 kg) and the retail price of wheat flour was fixed at PKR 860 per 20 kg-bag, some 20 percent down the prevailing price in the market. The measure aims to protect consumers from high prices and will remain in place for a period of two months. Prices of wheat flour rose significantly across the country in June and the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) introduced a number of measures to curb the increases, including the request to departments to set their wheat release policies and the easing of wheat import restrictions (FPMA Food Policies) with the possibility of the Government to import wheat in case of no purchases from the private sector. In addition, wheat will be released to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan Departments from the stocks of the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Service Corporation (PASSCO).
