Angola centralizes sales of wheat flour

10/11/2016,

In September, the Government centralised sales of wheat flour, selling it directly to registered bakeries at AOA 10 000 (USD 60) per 50 kg bags, compared with the nearly AOA 30 000 (USD 180) in the market. The measure aims to reduce the price of bread, a food staple in urban areas, which had reached record highs in August in nominal terms. Prices of wheat flour and bread declined slightly in September and October but still remained 44 percent and 34 percent respectively higher than their levels in October 2015, mainly due to the weakness of the currency and limited availability of mostly-imported flour. In October, despite a slowdown in the rate of increase, consumer price inflation was still 40 percent higher year on year.
