Rice production in 2008 is officially estimated at a record level of 2.63 million tonnes, 25 percent above the five-year average, reflecting the favourable weather and high producer prices. Since wheat is not produced in the country, the estimated requirement of some 1 million tonnes is all imported.

Despite the bumper crop and satisfactory in food supply at national level, the country’s food security situation continues to be affected by ongoing civil conflict, refugees, as well as rising cereal prices. Over 100 civilians have reportedly been killed and 230 000 people affected in crossfire between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the military in January 2009.
