A future Caribbean record in line with global standards

15/11/2017

The second Regional Working Group on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, held in Barbados between the 19 – 21 September, brought together members of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC), the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Organization for Fisheries and Aquaculture of Central America (OSPESCA).

This technical meeting discussed and agreed on various measures which are crucial to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing, such as vessel marking and identification, the establishment of a regional vessel record and the creation of regional IUU vessel lists.

Representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations’ Global Record team explained the Global Record Information System in detail. The Global Record can serve as a guide to the creation of a regional record in line with agreed global standards.
