During the thirty-second Committee on Fisheries (COFI) meeting in Rome, 11–15 July 2016, the Committee voiced strong support for the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels (Global Record) and its continued development by FAO.

It recognized that it could play an important role in combatting IUU fishing and in supporting other related international instruments.

The Committee commended the progress made, in particular in the establishment and work of the Global Record Informal Open-Ended Technical and Advisory Working Group (GRWG), specialized core working groups and the pilot project. It also urged broader participation including in the provision of data by Members.

During the same meeting, some Members encouraged the use of IMO numbers for the purpose of the Global Record; the need for collaboration with existing vessel record initiatives, in order to avoid duplication; and the need for an In-depth cost-benefit analysis and agreement on a stable financing programme before further progressing with the Global Record’s long-term operation.
