Global Record introduced to Mediterranean countries

23/05/2017

The Global Record programme was introduced to a number of Mediterranean countries, earlier this month, at the Special Working Group on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing, organized by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Athens, Greece, from 4–5 May 2017.

On 4 May many Mediterranean countries attended the presentation and demonstration provided by members of the Global Record team on the first working version of the Information System, which was launched a few days before.

The Special Group was held to assess the progress made in the implementation of Target 3 of the mid-term strategy to “Curb illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, through a regional plan of action”, as well as to present the draft for discussion of the GFCM regional plan of action to fight IUU fishing.

The session renewed the commitment towards the declaration of an International Day for the fight against IUU fishing.

The participants voiced full support to the Global Record and recommended that  Mediterranean countries participate to the programme since the Global Record is an essential internationaltool to fight IUU fishing.

Mediterranean countries also expressed their interest in participating in the Global Record programme, and willingness to start the implementation at the very earliest.
