Capacity development

Welcome to EduSoils

An e-learning educational platform

Soil education ensures adequate understanding of the impacts of unsustainable use of our soil natural resources on food security, climate change, and human health/well-being.

What is the programme about?

Aware of new trends in education and the growing demand for soil-related information, the GSP offers e-learning courses, video tutorials and training materials through the open source Educational Platform 'EduSoils'.

EduSOILS FAQ

EduSOILS is a platform for the transfer of knowledge generated within FAO and by the Global Soil Partnership partners, and not a platform for formal education

EduSOILS proposes a series of training materials and e-learning courses on soil-related issues to help build the capacity of different actors, with the ultimate goal of increasing understanding of the value of soil resources and their impact on food security, climate change and human health/well-being, the importance of soils protection and the determination of soils status at local, national and global levels. EduSOILS is a platform for the transfer of knowledge generated within FAO and by the Global Soil Partnership partners, and not a platform for formal education. Therefore, it is not envisaged that such courses can be included in a formal curriculum, unless specifically requested by a university or educational institution, in which case, the best way to ensure that the knowledge has been acquired by the students will be considered on a case-by-case basis. EduSOILS is intended to complement the existing catalogue of the FAO e-learning platform.

EduSOILS training materials will be organized under four categories. Each category can include several courses and training materials, which can be divided in modules:

Soil survey

  • Visual soil assessment
  • Soil description: applying FAO guidelines
  • Soil sampling and pre-treatment
  • Soil properties analysis
  • Soil classification

Soil mapping and monitoring

  • Digital soil mapping
  • Soil organic carbon (SOC) mapping
  • Soil salinity mapping
  • SOC sequestration potential mapping
  • Soil erosion mapping

Soil threats and management practices

  • SOC loss and its control practices
  • Soil pollution and its control practices
  • Soil erosion and its control practices
  • Soil biodiversity loss and its control practices
  • Soil salinity and its control practices
  • Soil nutrition imbalance and its control practices
  • Soil compaction and its control practices

Sustainable Soil Management

  • Fundamentals of sustainable soil management
  • How to implement the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management
  • How to implement the International Code of Conduct on Sustainable Use and Management of Fertilizers
  • Global Soil Doctors Programme teaching materials

The set of training materials will include, but not be limited to:

  • Video tutorials
  • Presentations
  • e-learning courses
  • Webinars
  • Tutored courses

There are two modalities of learning within EduSOILS:

1.Self-learning materials and courses

These includes video tutorial, presentations, webinars, and e-learning courses. They do not follow a set schedule and are permanently open for review and completion. All training materials will be designed for self-paced learning. In addition to the training materials, a number of links to online resources, recommended reading, checklists and wide-range of job aids will be provided to increase user engagement and utilization. For e-learning courses, self-assessment tests may be included during the development of the course to guide the learning process.

2.Tutored courses

These include live online or in-person trainings. These trainings will have a starting and end date and assignments have to be completed as indicated at the beginning of each session. These trainings will have a tutor who will teach through virtual lessons and will provide support over the course period. The realization of these trainings will depend on the availability of resources and demand. When the GSP Secretariat offers a live online course, it will be announced on the EduSOILS and GSP website and through the newsletter and social media well in advance to ensure participation.

Training materials will be developed using GSP/FAO materials, and partners can also contribute to the creation and development of new courses and materials. The copyright of the materials publish in EduSOILS belongs to the GSP and to the GSP partners who contribute to the development of the materials.

The main language of the training materials will be English. The materials will be translated into the official languages of FAO where possible, and may be translated into other languages in collaboration with GSP partners and other interested institutions.

Given the wide variety of training materials that are expected to be offered on this platform, potential users of the EduSOILS will vary from professionals, students at different levels, researchers from various areas of knowledge, farmers and land users, politicians and government technicians. The courses are also intended for those who do not work directly in the area but are interested in adding new knowledge and learning about soil-related topics.

The EduSOILS platform will follow the indications of the FAO corporate e-learning platform. The GSP Secretariat will be responsible and will facilitate the technical assistance during the delivery of the courses (participants registration, follow up and monitoring of participants contributions and inputs, content update, etc).

For the preparation and development of teaching materials, and to assure quality and pedagogical adaptation, the GSP Secretariat will have the support and participation of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS), the Pillar 2 working group, in cooperation with partner universities and accredited course providers (such as the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council – ITRC).

The EduSOILS platform starts with a set of training materials that have been developed by the GSP over the years, but more materials will be added according to the work plan:

2020-2021: Platform building and course testing

Develop training materials on at least two topics, based on GSP materials, distribute and send the courses to designated audience for testing the function of platform and the response of the course materials. Modify the course according to the feedback.

2022-2023: EduSOILS platform growth

Develop training materials on at least five topics with the cooperation of partners and distribute the courses to widest audience. Invest in the dissemination of the platform and its use.

2024 - onwards: Consolidation of EduSOILS platform

Develop training materials for the remaining topics, propose new topics and modify the platform with user feedback.
