Implementation of the recommendations from the Global Symposium on Soil Erosion | GSER19
The Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (GSER19) was held at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, on 15-17 May 2019 and attended by more than 500 participants from 104 countries, including representatives of FAO member states, organizing institutions, scientists and practitioners working on the remediation of polluted soils, the agrochemical industry and representatives from the private sector and civil society.
The recommendations presented in the outcome document are aimed at supporting the development of policies and actions to encourage the implementation of soil management and land use planning strategies that enhance the prevention, minimization of soil erosion and restauration of eroded soils when feasible, through the promotion of sustainable soil management (SSM). The recommendations are structured around the three themes of the symposium:
THEME 1: SOIL EROSION ASSESSMENTS TOOLS AND DATA; CREATION, CONSOLIDATION AND HARMONIZATION
Recommendation 1: Create an expert and multi-stakeholder working group to develop the methodology and guidelines for the preparation of the Global Soil Erosion map
Recommendation 2: Organize capacity development and training for countries to develop national soil erosion assessment, as well as the necessary data management and monitoring facilities
THEME 2: POLICY AND PRACTICES IN ACTION TO ADDRESS SOIL EROSION
Recommendation 3: To establish a working group to develop a database of good practices for addressing soil erosion control
Recommendation 4: To implement an action plan on the assessment of effective policies and practices to control soil erosion and to analyse major gaps on the development and implementation of soil erosion control policies at global, regional and national levels
THEME 3: THE ECONOMICS OF SOIL EROSION PREVENTION, MANAGEMENT AND REMEDIATION
Recommendation 5: Implement a global study on the economics of soil erosion and soil erosion control as a first contribution to the ongoing initiative on the economics of Sustainable Soil Management
Recommendation 6: Facilitate and support multi-stakeholder dialogue by creating a multi-stakeholder platform to inform and advise on the best approaches and strategies to implement soil erosion control activities at all scales and their benefits, contributing to fill gaps between science, policy land users
