The 6th Latin America and the Caribbean Soil Partnerships plenary meeting, Workshop & Closing of Technical Cooperation Project “Capacity development in soil information for sustainable natural resources management in countries of South America”
The 6th ordinary meeting of the Regional Soil Partnerships for Latin America and the Caribbean will be held in Quito, Ecuador on 22 May to review the achievements and discuss/plan the upcoming activities. The meeting will be preceded by the regional workshop “Use of tools of the Global Soil Partnership for informed decision-making and sustainable soil/land management in Latin America and the Caribbean” together with the closure meeting of the TCP/RLA/3613 regional project on 20 - 21 May 2019.
The workshop addresses different actors involved in sustainable soil/land management in the region and will contribute to informed decision-making for sustainable soil and land management in Latin America and the Caribbean, through the presentation of tools of the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), developed in the framework of the project TCP/RLA/3613 in South America.
The regional project TCP/RLA/3613 aimed to develop national and regional capacities in the recuperation, registration and harmonization of soil data and its use as inputs for digital mapping. Similarly, the project contributed to reactivate the Soil Information System of Latin America and the Caribbean (SISLAC), created by FAO in 2012, with a new design, the use of open source software and with a large storage capacity. SISLAC actually houses data of around 40 000 soil profiles from 10 countries of South America and is expected to integrate additional information from soil profiles of Central America, México and the Caribbean in the short term. In this way, SISLAC provides essential data to guide informed decision-making in the region.
