Global Soil Partnership

GSOCmap Training in Nairobi, Kenya

To support the GSOCmap development activities, the FAO/GSP is organizing a one-week on-the- job training.

The event realized with the support of FAORAF and FAO Kenya aims at building capacities in the countries under the African Soil Partnership in order to develop national Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stock maps. This training will be held at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya from 3 to 7 July 2017. An estimated 31 participants from 31 countries will take part into this training.

Maintenance and rehabilitation of SOC stocks is gaining traction on the global agenda. A precise and global assessment is needed under different UN Convention, such as the UN Convention on Climate Change and Desertification (UNCCD), especially as an indicator for the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 15.3.1. At the country level, such data will be useful as reference soil carbon stocks, with the aim to refine  national greenhouse gas inventories, and to assess the response of soils to degradation and climate change adaptation/ mitigation.
