As part of the GSP’s capacity development and improvement programme, the FAO - Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and the Soil and Water Research Institute Iran (SWRI) have jointly organized the training on Digital Soil Organic Carbon mapping in January 2018. This 5 day training titled ’Training on Digital Soil Organic Carbon Mapping’ was held in Karaj at the Conference Hall, Deputy Office of Water and Soil on 20-24 January, 2018,  with 31 soil experts from national research institutes, universities. Prior to the training, a side meeting were organised to discuss the Iran’s contribution to the Global Soil Organic Carbon Map (GSOCmap) initiative and agreed on the delivery of the National Soil Organic Carbon Map in line with GSOCmap technical specifications. 

The main goal of the training was to increase the capacity of Iran on digital soil mapping, new approaches on data collection, data processing and modelling of soil organic carbon as well as other soil properties. The training covered following topics:

-          Global Soil Partnership and It’s activities

-          Global Soil Information System (GLOSIS), Global Soil organic Carbon Map (GSOCMap), Technical Specifications

-          Importance and benefits of Soil organic carbon

-          Digital soil mapping, DSM tools and software

-          Data preparation (Soil Data, Soil Profiles, Covariates)

-          QGIS and R basics, spatial data preparation, coordinate systems

-          Linear models, multiple linear regression, regression kriging, random forest and support vector machines, validation and uncertainties.
