9th Working Session of the ITPS

The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Plenary Assembly in June 2018 endorsed the new panel of 27 experts who will serve as the third ITPS for the 2018-2021 term. Important goals lie ahead of the top soil experts who will provide scientific and technical advice on global soil issues to the Global Soil Partnership under different development agendas and related UN bodies and conventions.

As the top scientific panelist on soil, ITPS experts meets twice a year to make progress in reversing soil degradation and promoting healthy soils under the framework of the Global Soil Partnership. Among its crucial achievements the revision and update of the World Soil Charter, the compilation of the new World Soil Resources Report (WSRR), the endorsement and implementation of the plans for the 5 pillars of action of the GSP as well as the establishment of scientific and policy-relevant relations with other science-policy interfaces like the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) and the SPI (Science – Policy Interface) of the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) on punctual tasks such as the organization of the Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon in March 2017 (GSOC17) and with the WHO (World Health Organization), UN Environment and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions for the organization of the Global Symposium on Soil Pollution in May 2018 (GSOP18).
