Global Soil Salinity mapping training for Africa

In the framework of the Global Soil Salinity Map (GSSmap) that will be launched in December 2020, the GSP is organizing a two week training online for African countries. The main objective is to prepare country-level data for national mapping of soil salinity.

48 participants from 29 countries were trained. Specifically: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Djibouti, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Also, for each country (in each region) a set of environmental predictors for digital soil mapping based on the public sources was prepared. These predictors include MODIS satellite imagery, digital elevation models, temperature, precipitation, land cover.

Most national experts successfully finished the training program and all exercises and are now working on their national maps. Consultations are continuing (based on necessity) for the countries working on their maps.
