21 national soil institutions and an interesting number of regional soil institutions and initiatives participated and presented the status, needs and priorities for sustainable soil management in their countries. This constitutes a fruitful base for preparing a draft priority actions document. 

The Nairobi Communiqué was prepared by the participants in which they report about the establishment of the Global Soil Partnership in the region and expressed the urgent need to promote the sustainable management of soils if to achieve food security, climate change adaptation and poverty reduction in the region. Five main priority actions were identified as priority: a) developing, updating and disseminating harmonized national and regional soil information, b) developing and implementing training and capacity development programs, c) guiding and enabling the implementation of sustainable soil management practices and restoration of soil health, d) addressing soil degradation and e) establishing linkages and networks with other initiatives that impact soil health.

It was agreed that a report will be jointly produced as a base for developing a plan of action aiming at the promotion of sustainable soil management in the region.
