Headquarters 11-13 June: 6th Global Soil Partnership Plenary Assembly

11 – 13 June 2018, FAO HQ. Starting today, Monday, June 11 at 9:00 am (GMT+2 time), the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) holds its 6th Annual Plenary Assembly hosted at FAO Headquarter, Rome.

Wrapping up the progress made since its last session in June 2017, participants of the Plenary will be asked to take note of the GSP’s meaningful contributions to the promotion of sustainable soil management, including important technical meetings and studies, normative tools, continuing field projects, capacity development programs and the global soil agenda for 2018 - 2019.

The GSP Plenary Assembly promotes national leadership and scientific and technical cooperation on soil policies and their implementation at country, regional and global levels. It provides a networking opportunity and strengthens work relationships among the GSP partners.

Opening remarks by Mr. Daniel Gustafson, FAO Deputy Director General – Operations and Mr. Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, Permanent Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand will welcome the participants coming from all over the world. The keynote speaker, Mr. Valere Nzeyimana, Senior Officer at the FAO Regional Office in Africa, will illustrate the key achievements of a significant project for rehabilitating degraded soils in Sao Tome and Principe with important findings on how a minor investment on soils could transform the food security and life of family farmers.

A summary of the agenda is provided below:

  • Main accomplishments of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) during the 2017 – 2018 biennium and the appointment of the new ITPS panel for 2019 – 2020.
  • Pillars Implementation Reports 2017-18 and Regional Soil Partnerships reports.
  • GSP-prompted activities, such as the organization of the past symposiums on Soil Organic Carbon and Soil Pollution, the state-of-the-work and the proposal for the next symposiums.
  • The zero draft version of the International Code of Conduct for the Use and Management of Fertilizers.
  • Progress report on the perilous situation of the financial status of the GSP, including the Healthy Soils Facility.
  • The next communication campaign for World Soil Day 2018 ‘Be the Solution to Soil Pollution’ and the Glinka World Soil Prize award.

Within the context of active implementation of concrete actions in the field, the soil programme for Africa ‘Afrisoils: boosting soil productivity for a food secured Africa’ (link) will be launched.

The NENA Soil Partnership and the African Soil Partnership will meet for their Regional Plenary Assemblies on the 13 June 2018.
