Mapping Global Soil Organic Carbon sequestration (GSOCseq) potential

Module I: Capacity Development Program

The GSP Secretariat has implemented and nearly completed Module I of the Global Soil Organic Carbon sequestration potential map’s capacity development program to support national experts in modeling and mapping Soil Organic Carbon sequestration under different soil management scenarios. The online training sessions took place between October and December 2020 for seven regions and were attended by over 300 participants.

The GSOCseq will fill a big gap by simulating soil organic carbon stocks over a 20–year period in agricultural lands as well as quantifying the soil organic carbon sequestration potential under different sustainable soil management and business as usual (BAU) scenarios. In the long term, it will provide a global perspective and understanding of the critical role of soils in major global issues.

Module II: Map Production Phase

National experts will be further supported during the map production phase with Module II, which will take place between February and the end of March 2021 in the forms of one-on-one online sessions with FAO instructors. Following this approach, the GSP Secretariat is looking forward to the successful launch of the GSOCseq map – the first-ever country-led Global Soil Organic Carbon sequestration potential map!
