As the year comes to an end, it falls to the GSP to keep up the soil momentum by highlighting new challenges and turning outcomes into tangible actions. GSP is already implementing actions in all the regions to promote the sustainable soil management and focused activities will continue well beyond WSD.

Initiatives such as the assessment of soil erosion in Malawi have been completed and the results thereof have converged in the publication of the related book “Soil Loss Assessment in Malawi”. This report represents a joint effort by the Government of Malawi, UNEP-UNDP under the PEI programme and FAO through the GSP to assess the soil loss/erosion using state of the art technologies and tools and to guide in the best approaches to control the soil loss problems in the country.

Among many other news, we are also pleased to announce the release of the french version of “Boosting Africa’s Soils” – “Stimuler les sols africains” , which presents an overview of the current issue of soil management practices in Africa. It briefly outlines the 12-Resolution “Abuja Declaration on Fertilizer for the African Green Revolution” adopted in 2006 and contextualizes the 2014 adoption by the 23rd Summit of the African Union of the Malabo Declaration on Accelerated Agricultural Growth and Transformation for Shared Prosperity and Improved Livelihoods that reaffirmed that agriculture should remain high on the 2030 Africa development agenda. The challenges to sustainable soil management such as erosion, fertility depletion and nutrient imbalances are presented and the sustainable use and management of terrestrial ecosystems, forests, mountains, land, biodiversity and soils with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are summarized and presented clearly and succinctly.
