Open Call for the Chairperson of the International Network of Soil Information Institutions (INSII)

The International Network of Soil Information Institutions (INSII) serves as the technical backbone of Pillar 4 and as the main data provider network for the Global Soil Information System (GloSIS). INSII consists of nationally mandated institutions and other Global Soil Partnership (GSP) partners that have the willingness to contribute to the GloSIS. In order to take further steps in the execution of the Pillar 4 Implementation Plan, the network needs a committed, highly qualified individual to serve as the INSII Chairperson. In collaboration with the GSP Secretariat, the INSII Chairperson will chair the INSII's annual working sessions as well as virtual and in-person Pillar 4 Working Group meetings, reporting on progress made to the GSP Plenary and INSII. The Chairperson is expected to collaborate with other GSP pillars, technical networks and working groups including the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS).

The network is supported by a technical working group of soil information experts (Pillar 4 Working Group). Among other tasks, this working group elaborates additional guidance for developing GSP soil data products, which build on existing and new national soil information. These products play an essential role in creating and compiling data, which are envisioned to ultimately feed GloSIS.

As Mr. Neil McKenzie (former INSII Chair) retired, all Chair duties were taken over temporarily by the GSP Secretariat. The new INSII Chair will be appointed during the 7th GSP Plenary Assembly for a 2-year mandate.

In order to take further steps in the implementation execution of the Pillar 4 Implementation Plan, the network needs a committed, highly qualified individual to serve as the INSII Chairperson. Within this mandate and with the facilitation role of the GSP Secretariat, as the coordinating body of the GSP programmes and activities, the INSII Chairperson, will carry out the following activities:

  • Serve as chair for the INSII and Pillar 4 Working Group;

  • In collaboration with the GSP Secretariat, plan annual INSII meetings and serve as Chair;

  • In collaboration with the GSP Secretariat, plan and chair in-person and virtual Pillar 4 Working Group Meetings;

  • Report on progress made in the Pillar 4 Implementation Plan to the GSP Plenary and INSII;

  • In conjunction with the GSP Secretariat, draft and finalise annual meeting reports of the INSII Workshops;

  • Support the interaction among the INSII members and facilitate joint activities between members that are beneficial to the network.

The candidatures should be accompanied by a CV and sent to the GSP Secretariat (GSP-Secretariat@fao.org) by 05/05/2019.  Please note that the position is not remunerated while the expenses associated with this position are covered by the nominating country or institution.
