The six finalists

To help you choose, here are some brief descriptions of the videos.

1. Aynoq'as y Taqanas (Bolivia)
Anthropogenic Soil Project IIDEPROQ – UMSA, in collaboration with Sociedad Boliviana de la Ciencia del Suelo (SBCS)

Farmers in the Andean highlands carry out a number of traditional techniques and sustainable soil management practices to fight soil erosion. This video explores how Aynoq'as (long rotation practices) and Taqanas (terraces) help to reduce the effects of soil erosion in the Andes.

2. The signs of soil erosion (Burundi)
PAPAB – Burundi, in collaboration with Wageningen UR - IFDC - RBU2000+

Bélyse, a farmer from Burundi, explains the signs and effects of soil erosion in her field. This video aims to raise awareness about soil erosion among farmers by focusing on the four most visible signs of soil erosion that farmers need to look out for.

3. Mother Earth (Nepal)

A young boy watches his mother clear a piece of land and prepare it for cultivation. He observes the soil’s fragility as it is cultivated, blown away by the wind and washed away by water. Our soils must be safeguarded because “soil is our mother, soil is life”.

4. Promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture in Rwanda (Rwanda)

Land degradation and soil erosion are among the main challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Rwanda. This video captures testimonies from a farmer and an agricultural extension officer who explain how sustainable soil management practices such as agroforestry and terracing are making a difference in Rwanda.

5. The impact of olive cultivation on soil erosion in the Mediterranean (Spain)

The cultivation of olive trees in the Mediterranean basin occupies approximately 7.5 million hectares affecting the quality of soils in the region. This video explains the causes of soil erosion in the Mediterranean and identifies sustainable soil management practices to protect soils in the area.

6. The story of a reinvigoration in Karapınar, Central Anatolia (Turkey)
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, Konya Soil Water and Combating Desertification Research Institute

This video tells the story of the Karapinar Region of Turkey, a region that experienced severe wind erosion due to deforestation. The Konya Soil Water and Combating Desertification Research Institute worked to “reinvigorate” soils in the area through a number of sustainable soil management practices which have brought the region back to life.
