The soil community is deeply saddened by the death of Prof. Badraoui, a brilliant soil scientist with more than 32 years of experience in agricultural research. During his professional career he focused on soil fertility management and crop fertilization and fertigation but also on soil mapping for land management and soil salinity management under irrigated systems for intensive crop production. Since 2008, he served as the Director General of Morocco’s National Agronomic Research Institute (INRA), based in Rabat, Morocco. He was also elected in 2011 as a member of the French Academy of Agriculture. One year later he became member of the board of directors of the International Fertilizers Development Center (IFDC) and a member of the board of trusties of the International Center for the Agricultural Research Center in Dry areas (ICARDA). In addition, from 2013, he took part into the first FAO/GSP Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) participating in the preparation of the Status of World’s Soil Resources, in collaboration with a large number of experts, giving a strong contribution to the inclusion of soil-related targets and indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Prof. Badraoui was also the Secretary General of the Morocco National Council on the Environment, member of the High National Council on Water and Climate and presided the Moroccan Association of Soil Science since 1992.
