International Network of Soil Information Institutions (INSII) and Pillar 4

21/04/2016

Pillar 4 focusses on enhancing the quantity and quality of soil data and information: data collection (generation), analysis, validation, reporting, monitoring and integration with other disciplines. The Pillar 4 Implementation Plan provides the guidance to build the global soil information system. It is based on soil data sets provided by national and other institutional soil information institutions accordingto product specifications. Data are provided according to own national and institutional terms, mini-mizing  centralized  components.  The  design  of  the  system  is  based  on  published  standards  for  the  ex-change of digital spatial data, and also follows the architectural principles of the Global Earth ObservationSystem of the Systems (GEOSS).

The workshop “Establishment of the International Network of Soil Information Institutions” took place at FAO Headquarters on 8-10 December 2015. During this workshop, the structure, roadmap, roles and responsibilities for the execution of Pillar 4 were discussed and decided.
