From 19 to 21 May 2024, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) will mark its centennial in Florence, with three days of conferences addressing civil society needs in agriculture, forestry, environment, urban planning, energy, education, and other areas.

Representatives from approximately 60 soil laboratories across 23 different countries attended the Latin American Soil Laboratory Network (LATSOLAN). The gathering kicked off in Santiago de Chile on 8 April and continued with sessions in Chillán from 9 to 11 April. The workshop entitled “Pathways to precision in soil analysis: advancing soil laboratories in Latin America and the Caribbean” aimed to advance soil analysis in the region through collaborative efforts between LATSOLAN members.

The Recarbonization of Global Agricultural Soils, known as the RECSOIL initiative, driven by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and its the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), continues to make significant strides in its mission to recarbonize soils, with Costa Rica leading the way as a pioneer in its implementation. RECSOIL Costa Rica involves key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica (MAG), the National Forestry Financing Fund (FONAFIFO Costa Rica, for its acronym in Spanish), the National Institute for Innovation and Transfer of Agricultural Technology (INTA, for its acronym in Spanish), the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE), the Dos Pinos producers' cooperative, the University of Costa Rica, and the Costa Rican Soil Science Association.

The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) Plenary Assembly is the most important gathering of the partnership where crucial decisions concerning the global soil agenda are taken. It is the main platform for FAO Members and GSP partners to meet and exchange knowledge and expertise in the field of sustainable soil management.

The implementation of the Global Soil Doctors Programme (GSDP) in Chile is a joint initiative between the Agriculture and Livestock Service (SAG) under the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) in collaboration with the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences at the University of Chile, the Institute for Agricultural Development (INDAP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO)’s Global Soil Partnership (GSP).  The national promoter of the programme in the country is SAG.
