Launch workshop of the Global Soil Partnership for Central America and The Caribbean

The launch workshop of the Global Soil Partnership: towards prevention and restoration of degraded soils in Central America and The Caribbean took place at Hotel Melia Habana in La Habana, Cuba from 30th September to 3rd August 2013.

15 national and three regional soil institutions participated and presented the status, needs and priorities for sustainable soil management in their countries.

The Comunicado de la Habana was prepared by the participants in which they fully support the establishment of the Central America, Mexico and Caribbean Soil Partnership and expressed their concern about the advanced soil degradation status in the region and its impact in food security. Furthermore, they manifested that the promotion and adoption of sustainable soil management should be an imperative at all levels if to reach food security and sustainable development.

A Regional Steering Committee of the Central America, Mexico and Caribbean Soil Partnership was established aiming to a full establishment and implementation of activities. Furthermore, working groups were established to develop implementation plans under each of the 5 GSP pillars.
