Many environmental
changes on a global level are of such a complex nature, that
their analysis and assessment asks for data from a variety
of sources. This is where the GTOS thematic demonstration
projects can demonstrate the benefits of interdisciplinary
cooperation among the different groups of the global science
communtity. They are tailored to tackle specific questions
in the field of global environmental sciences, such as the
tracking of global carbon fluxes and the monitoring of global
net primary productivity changes. In both demonstration projects
remote sensing experts and in situ monitoring site managers
combine their efforts to produce and process data, that can
be exchanged, validated and calibrated for applications in
modelling, research and policy analysis.
