Science
team for Landsat Data Continuity Mission includes three
members of GOFC-GOLD Land Cover Implementation Team
The
science team will provide advice to the U.S. Geological
Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) on issues including data acquisition, product access
and format, and promoting science opportunities for Landsat
data.
Tom
Loveland of the USGS will lead the science team. Curtis
Woodstock of Boston University will provide expertise
toward operational global monitoring of land cover change.
Michael Wulder of Natural Resources Canada at the Canadian
Forest Service will provide expertise in large-area land
cover mapping and dynamics.

International
Symposium on Forest and Land Cover Observations at Jena,
Germany 21-25 March 2006
The
GOFC-GOLD symposium included workshops on monitoring tropical
deforestation for compensated reductions and monitoring
boreal forest ecosystems for international conventions,
as well as meetings of the land cover implementation team
and regional networks.

Land Cover Implementation team release report on Reducing
Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation in Developing
Countries
The
report “Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Deforestation
in Developing Countries: Considerations for Monitoring
and Measuring” was initiated at the 2006 International
Symposium on Forest and Land Cover Observations. The report
has been submitted to the UNFCCC SBSTA committee in preparation
for the COP12.

The
Land Cover Implementation Team project office is advising
GLOBCOVER on classification issues. The GlOBCOVER classification
system will be compatible with the Global Land Cover map
(GLC 2000).

plan
Several
members of the Land Cover Implementation Team participated
in three drafting meetings in 2006. The report "Satellite
Observation of the Climate System: The Committee on Earth
Observation Satellites (CEOS) Response to the Global Climate
Observing System (GCOS) Implementation Plan (IP)”
was released in September 2006.

works with FAO to develop methods and global data sets
for use in the upcoming FRA 2010 Global Forest Assessment
GOFC-GOLD
Land Cover Implementation team members participated in
the Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) for 2010 planning
meeting on 18-19 October at Washington, D.C. GOFC-GOLD
is contributing methods, sampling procedures, a framework
for global forest change and assessment and will advocate
space based observations and radar sampling for areas
with permanent cloud cover.

helps initiate GEO Community of Practice for Forest Observations
GEO
and its User Interface Committee (UIC) have started to
evolve a Community of Practice for forest observations
(FCP) to respond to user requirements and to address the
GEO Work Plan targets and its societal benefit areas.
The FCP is comprised of representatives from Canada, Sweden,
Finland, and GOFC-GOLD and was established at the GEO
II plenary in December 2005.

presents technical document on reducing emission from
deforestation at the UNFCCC/COP 12 in Nairobi
The
GOFC-GOLD coordinated technical document was presented
at a joint ESA/GOFC-GOLD side event at the 6-12 November
UNFCCC/COP 12 in Nairobi, Kenya. Members of the Land Cover
Implementation Team distributed the technical document
at an exhibition booth.
