South Eastern European Regional Information Network Launched

The South Eastern European Regional Information Network (SEERIN) was initiated at the 2010 Joint NASA LCLUC Science Team Meeting and GOFC-GOLD/NERIN, NEESPI Workshop in Tartu, Estonia.

SEERIN aims to promote and coordinate the production and provision of Earth System observations for user communities in South Eastern Europe with a focus on the Danube watershed and western Black Sea coast. SEERIN includes Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Moldova and others.

Cross-Cutting Thematic Areas:

  • Detection and analysis of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change
  • Impacts of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change on the Regional, National and Local:
    • Water Resource Management
    • Forest Resource Management
    • Biodiversity and species preservation
    • Sustainable Development and Natural Resource Management
    • Global Climate Change
  • Assessment of the Human Dimensions of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change

GOFC-GOLD Fire Inter-Regional Network and Joint GOFC-GOLD and GWFN Meeting

The 1st GOFC-GOLD Fire Inter-Regional Network and 1st Joint GOFC-GOLD and Global Wildland Fire Network (GWFN) meeting was held during the 5th International Wildfire conference in South Africa, 9-13 May 2011.

The side event was focused on engaging fire science, user and management communities to address regional concerns and issues; providing a strong voice for regional needs; and fostering the lateral transfer of technology and methods concerning fire science and management within and between regions.

GOFC-GOLD recommendations were developed under the following categories:

  1. Capacity building in the use of fire satellite products
  2. Product / data access
  3. Strengthened involvement of regional networks in validation and quality assessment of satellite fire products
  4. Fire Early Warning Systems
  5. Consistent global fire assessment that is endorsed by the network community and updated on a regular basis
  6. Assistance for GOFC-GOLD regions in quantifying pyrogenic emissions defining protocols and standards to use in a regionally appropriate manner
