Working Group on Biomass Monitoring The biomass monitoring theme is responding to the need for international coordination to enhance biomass monitoring using a combination of remote sensing and in-situ observations. The biomass working group helps to bridge the needs and requirements of the international user community with remote sensing observation progress developed in the research domain by specifying suitable products towards operational implementation.

The working group is supporting international initiatives to specify the observation requirements for monitoring biomass as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), is working with the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) task for forest carbon tracking, and is supporting space agencies and their efforts to improve biomass monitoring, including the development of dedicated space-borne missions.

The working group fosters cooperation and exchange of data and information among different communities and agencies involved in biomass and carbon assessments, including integration activities with a number of other relevant ECV observation products, in particular land cover and fire.

The Biomass working group is coordinated by the GOFC-GOLD Land Cover project office located in The Netherlands.
