Overview
Forest
Fire
Monitoring and Mapping
The global
increase in wildfires following the 1997-98 El Niņo event
emphasized the urgent need for more complete, accurate and
timely information. Data from existing and near-term coarse
resolution sensors can satisfy most of the information requirements
regarding fire locations and extent, and automated algorithms
have been demonstrated to extract these parameters. Eventually,
the goal is to derive information on fire severity and carbon
emissions. The proposed approach is shown schematically in
Figure 4.
