GTOS
Regional Implementation Plan for Southern Africa
Abstract
Southern
Africa, after the Central and Eastern European initiative,
is the second of a series of GTOS efforts to develop regional
terrestrial observing programmes. In the initial phase (during
1999) the user needs of the region were assessed and possible
activities and projects were evaluated to meet these needs.
Country studies on the environmental information systems of
Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the southern
African region as a whole were carried out. A regional consultation
was organized in southern Africa which identified the main
user needs related to data, information, data policy, capacity
building and management requirements that GTOS should satisfy
during its operation. Based on these criteria, a management
plan has been elaborated.
